Build Character in Children using Christian Biographies

by Guest Post
Kid Books

Building character in children can be something you do from your couch. Build character in children using Christian biographies for kids.

Build Character in Children

As parents, we want to build character in our kids. After all, our children’s character will affect the decisions they make, the friends they keep, and the small daily actions which become the fabric of their lives. Character qualities like kindness, hope, persistence, and joy are vitally important traits for our kids to possess.

There are many important ways we can help build character in our kids. In fact, Heather Haupt’s excellent parenting book, Knights in Training: Ten Principles for Raising Honorable, Courageous, and Compassionate Boys, is a wonderful volume on ways to help your children develop good character–based on the Knight’s Code of Chivalry–which will serve them for a lifetime.

Christian Biographies

One of the easy, fun ways we can help our children develop good character is through true stories of real-life people overcoming hardship. I love Christian biographies because they so clearly tell the stories of people committed to living for God, and committed to loving their neighbors as themselves.

Children are built to absorb, process, and understand story. At an early age, they can innately understand how the characters in their favorite stories grow and develop as they overcome obstacles and fight for truth. And, what child doesn’t love a good read aloud? As kids grow, time spent reading independently becomes an important part of their education and free time.

Christian biographies help kids learn important character-building lessons, such as:

  • How to overcome discouraging circumstances.
  • What it looks like to live a life of integrity.
  • Why godly character is important.
  • That an ordinary life well-lived can change lives, and even the course of history.
  • Provide real-life heroes for our kids to look up to.

Helping children develop character doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it can be as easy as reading a chapter to your children each afternoon!
