As you approach the anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, are you wondering how to approach the subject with your young children? While preschoolers and early elementary ages cannot understand the violence and may not be able to understand the impact of these events, they can benefit from learning what happened in an age appropriate, and content sensitive way.
I have found that a good illustrated book is my best ally in approaching a sensitive topic and I have two wonderful books to tell you about today!
Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman tells the true story of this fireboat that was built in 1931, retired in 1995 to be sold for scrap. The Harvey was rescued and refurbished by a group of private citizens. The one sunny September day, “something so horrible happened that the whole world shook.” The Harvey came out of retirement and worked for 4 days and nights to help the city in those dark days. This book highlights the heroes in NYC in such a way to bring hope and courage.
14 Cows for America by Carmen Agra Deedy and Wilson Kimeli Naiyomah tells the true story of a touching gift of life given by Maasai warriors in Kenya. This book will encourage us all to be sensitive and caring to those experiencing loss and grief.
